  Do I Need To Recycle?

The Government made it clear in its 2000 waste strategy its intentions to drive up the cost of landfill to increase recycling in order to meet European targets. UK Waste producers are affected by an increasing range of legislation designed to strengthen controls on the handling of waste and to reduce both the amount of waste going to landfill and its environmental impact.

Very soon, the segregation at source of recyclable material will be your legal responsibility rather than an option.

 What Happens To The Waste?

We return paper collected from your office to one of our depots in St Albans, Milton Keynes or Luton, where it is sorted according to grade (there are approximately 500 grades of waste paper).  It is then baled into half tonnes cubes it is then transported in loads of 25 tonnes to our Mills in the UK and Europe.

At the Mills the waste paper travels through a series of pulpers and cleaners before reaching the machine bed itself.

This first part of the process removes contaminates, de-inks and colours the fibre in preparation for the final sheet of paper.

Once on the machine bed the substance (95% water) travels through presses and drying cylinders to form a reel of paper.

Paper for recycling should not go in the dustbin at all.  Separating paper from general rubbish is the key to greater effectiveness in the utilisation of waste paper.  With the help of the Paper Planet Recycling scheme, you can recycle your waste effectively.

 Why Should I Recycle?

At present there is no legal requirement to recycle although, the European Landfill Directive will place this legal requirement on waste producers.  However, as citizens we each have a moral obligation to recycle and recover the earths’ natural resources for future generations.  At present landfill of waste is deemed a simple “quick fix” solution.  The government has made it clear that by continually increasing the standard rate of landfill tax this option will become ever more expensive.

Recent figures suggest that the United Kingdom is second from bottom in a table showing achieved recycling rates across Europe with the largest percentage of waste going to landfill.  It is our joint responsibility to alter this situation.

What About The Data Protection Act?

Under the Data Protection Act you may be prosecuted for not disposing of company waste correctly.  All waste paper collected by us is destroyed by pulping, ensuring your sensitive material is disposed of in a responsible manner.  For your added protection, we do advise that that any highly confidential material is shredded prior to collection.

You also have the peace of mind that recycling your waste ensures your company is protecting the environment rather than just adding to the increasing burden of landfill.

Why Do I Have To Pay?

Recycling is subject to the same operation costs as any business trading in the United Kingdom.  The government policies on fuel taxation affect us as they do everyone else.  There are no concessions because of the work we do.  Our profitability is subject to the ongoing sale of recyclable materials as a raw material; as such it is subject to the usual market drivers of supply and demand.

Although, recyclables are a raw material source they are at the end of the day a waste by product and therefore the on sale value will always remain comparatively low.  To cover costs of collection, staff, insurances etc, all recyclers look to the waste producer, the customer to shoulder the burden of cost.
